Wisdom From Above
Salt & Light Volume IV, Issue 31 by D Scott Prindle

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom."
(James 3:13 emphasis mine)

Pillar of Meekness
bike Meekness is the third third pillar in the House of Wisdom. This means you value listening to understand over debating to be right.

Easier said then done, especially in the midst of contention, potential adversity and trials. Sometimes things can sour.

Customers get upset, employees feel hurt, and competitors attack. How you respond, not how you react, is the difference maker... whether or not something good will come of it.

When we owned a bike shop, I had the opportunity to build a custom Titanium mountain bike for a customer.

It was not where technology was headed. I knew we were right about this and was tempted to argue the point with him until I won the debate.

-their truth-
is what's
to them."

But our customer had convinced himself his way was the way to go, so we built him a beautiful $4000 bike which became obsolete within a year or two. But we won a loyal patron.

We learned that subjective reality has its own set of rules. Another's reality -their truth- is what's important to them.

Remember this. Speak the truth in love for their benefit, but value helpfulness over coming out on top of a disagreement.

Good Conduct
How do you respond to insults, injuries, and volatile situations with others? Are you fuel for the fire or a calm, soothing agent?

My flesh impulse is to call down fire from heaven. I have to take a step back and let Christ take a step forward so I can show good conduct when I feel like being nasty and vengeful.

This is walking in the Spirit or the new man. This is meekness... a strength of character that has a dramatic impact on those it touches.

Whether it's avoiding arguments with customers, empathizing with disgruntled employees, or keeping good relationships with competitors, meekness will earn you a reputation as one who is wise and understanding.

Next week we'll look at the central pillar of Wisdom's House.
