It's Showtime
Salt & Light Volume II, Issue 32 by D. Scott Prindle

He said, "Go tell this people: 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.'" (Isaiah 6:9)

The Greatest Show On Earth
I grew up on the corner of South Street and South Mountain Road in Pittfield, Massachusets.

It was where you turned off Route 7 to go to Bousquet, our local ski hill.

One summer I watched a parade of Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus trucks drive by our home on their way to Bousquet.

That's where they were going to set up the tents for the big show. I'd never heard of or seen a Circus before. I was one excited boy.

The scenes painted on the truck panels mesmerized me. Wild animals, flying trapeze, magicians, fire eaters... everything a kid ever dreamed about rolling by right before my eyes.

It was amazing. My boyish imagination was all I needed to experience the circus without ever being under the Big Top.

Then to my utter delight, mom and dad presented us with tickets to the Big Show.

As you might guess, it was better than what I had imagined... real dust, smells, sounds, and sights. Peanuts and popcorn. Up until then I had only seen the parade!

The Real Show
That's how it is sometimes with "church". You go. You feel good about going. You think you've heard or seen it all, but you've only seen the parade.

The Big Show happens when you go home and do business for the rest of the week.

If that's not happening, then Sunday worship can become a circus, or more likely a circus sideshow with you as a spectator!

Church isn't someplace you go, it's who you are... someone you are seven days a week. So go to church, but then go be the Church.

Experience the Big Show and avoid the being the freak show.
