Want To Outperform Your Competition?
Salt & Light Volume X, Issue 19 by D. Scott Prindle

"If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink." (Proverbs 25:21)

This proverb that Paul quotes in his letter to the Romans reminds us that Marketplace Ministry is contrary to the way the world does business.

"We must stay ahead of the competition (enemy)", the business world says.

There's a difference in how the Kingdom of God operates. The focus is on serving others, not gaining at the expense of others... even if the others are our competition.

If you focus on what people need and how your business can meet those needs, you're not going to worry about your competition. In fact, your competition will end up being your customer.

The Basics
On several of the business trips we have taken recently, we had opportunities to meet lots of people. From Americans to Austrians people have the same basic needs.

They need to feel:

  • Accepted- Do people want to associate with you and your company?
  • Valuable- Do you communicate that they are more than just "customers" or "clients"?
  • Competent- Do your products and services help people become better in their own careers?
Most of us do a good job letting our patrons know how much we appreciate their business. Do you also do a good job appreciating them as people?

Use these questions to evaluate your business. What can you offer to more effectively meet these basic needs?

Christ in You
Ultimately, only Christ completely fulfills these basic needs. You are accepted by Him, highly valued by Him, and competent in Him.

Through you, others needs will be met because Jesus works in you and through you.

But wait, there's more to this Proverb!

"For so you will heap coals of fire on his head, and the Lord will reward you." (Proverbs 25:22)

Trusting God even when things don't make sense (like meeting the needs of your competition) opens the door to His blessings.
